This international and ecumenical form of prayer from Taize, France combines simple chant, silence, and Scripture which leads to a deeper awareness of God’s presence.

This retreat begins at 8 PM December 31, with a short welcome, followed by prayer, song, reflection, video and Mass of Mary, Mother of God. Refreshments will be served in the dining room after Mass. $15

Overnight accommodations are available upon request. There will be a continental breakfast between 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM on January 1, 2012 for those staying over.

Using Christian scripture, Native American tradition, and one’s own life story, we will look at dreams and other symbol-rich moments of our lives. Reflecting on the power of these symbols and focusing on the transitional times, we’ll bring healing prayer into these experiences.

Jim Green is a Psychotherapist and Spiritual Director with more than 20 years in private practice in Charlotte, NC. Jim specializes in spirituality for emotional healing. He is a mixed-race member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, enrolled at White Earth Ojibwa Reservation. He brings to his work an appreciation for Native American Spirituality.

This retreat is designed to help married couples explore the meaning and the implications of the sacred dimension of marriage. Fr. Tom is a professed priest of the Oblates of St. Francis DeSales. His varied experience includes teaching, parish ministry, counseling and retreat ministries.

The retreat will attempt to find ways to commune with God in the natural world around us. Weather permitting this retreat will be conducted outside on the grounds of Living Waters with the afternoons free to explore the mountains surrounding Maggie Valley. Fr. John’s talks will center on the beauty and mystery of God as revealed in nature.



Fr. John Quigley is a Franciscan friar who has preached at Living Waters for 30 years. He has worked extensively in social justice ministry in Rome and Geneva. Now he is based in Cincinnati from which he travels to preach and teach.

A retreat that will focus on expressions of spiritual and creative gifts in order to transform and energize prayer and contemplation. Included in these expressions will be praying with mandalas, dance, music, art journaling, nature, and pen prayer to activate spiritual energy and enthusiasm in our personal journeys. Silence will be emphasized.

Based on her popular books, Everyday Epiphanies, When the Rain Speaks, and Just Because, Sr. Melannie’s retreat will explore some of the places we find God in our lives: in friendship, nature, joys, sorrows, current events, poetry, songs, and art. Using scripture, music, stories, and humor, Sister will help retreatants to connect with the God who is alive and active in their everyday lives.

Melannie Svoboda, a Sister of Notre Dame for over 45 years, resides in Chardon, OH. Sister has taught for more that 20 years, served in leadership in her community and ministered at the Jesuit novitiate in Detroit. She is the author of twelve books and numerous articles. She currently writes and gives talks and retreats nationally.

This retreat will explore the psychological, physical and religious effects of forgiveness on individuals and within relationships. Forgiveness has a real potential for personal and spiritual transformation. It is the central virtue in many of the world’s great religions. We will examine the role that forgiveness can play in alleviating anger and grief and the physical, mental and spiritual benefits that come with forgiveness.

Sr. Carol Marozzi, a Sister of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill, has a Masters Degree in Theology and Spirituality. She is experienced in retreat work and spiritual direction.

Living Waters is a ministry of the Diocese of Charlotte. We invite you to participate in our ministry. The fees that are requested for retreats cover only a portion of our costs. We depend on our generous benefactors to maintain and improve our beautiful center. Many hundreds of guests have visited Living Waters for spiritual renewal. Our guest rooms have provided a peaceful space for many years. They, now, are in need of renewal.


Other special needs for this year are: Swimming pool repair, bed linens, kitchen supplies, plumbing repairs and other key improvements.


If you feel that God has blessed you with the necessary means to contribute to our ministry, please consider a donation of monies, stocks, or a remembrance in your will.


A wonderful gift for someone special would be a gift certificate for a retreat.



General Information


Arrival-Departure -- Weekend retreats begin at 7:00 p.m. (no dinner) on Friday evening and end after lunch on Sunday. All other retreats begin at 7:00 p.m. (no dinner) on the starting day and end after breakfast on the last day of the retreat.

Check in after 4:00 P.M.


Transportation -- If traveling by car, follow U.S. 19 into Maggie Valley. We are located next to Ghost Town (across from a large Shell Station). If traveling by bus, take the Greyhound Trailways to Waynesville. If you are flying, use the Asheville, NC Airport. Transportation to and from the airport can be arranged with our volunteers at reasonable hours. We ask you to give them $25 each way for the gas etc. for the 45 mile trip.


Swimming Pool -- Open June 1 through Mid-September


Pets -- For the health and comfort of our guests, pets are not permitted


Art Studio – Is available for anyone who wishes to include creative experiences with retreat or sabbatical time at Living Waters.

Wireless internet service is available in the Center Lobby


Sabbatical Renewal...


Treat yourself to a spiritual renewal in the Smoky Mountains. Create your custom-made extended sabbatical time. Choose such possibilities as solitude, prayer, outings in the mountains, arts, and crafts experiences, holistic, and cultural events. An art space is available for creative experiences.


When? At your convenience! How long? One month to a year. Persons on sabbatical are invited to make any of the scheduled retreats that are being given while they are here. Write, call, or e-mail for more information.

It is recommended that persons on sabbatical bring a car

Private Retreats: $65.00 per night per person for one night

$60.00 per night per person for two or more nights

$45.00 per night per person with no meals


Directed Retreats: $25.00 per session - meeting with Sr. Fran Grady, SCL

once a day plus the nightly rate ($65, $60, or $45.)
